Yuting Liu: An Engagement Book

A Romantic Proposal

Storyteller: Yuting Liu, Canada

A man and woman standing on rocks in a creek.

How did you choose the setting for your engagement shoot?

My fiance Michael and I live in Calgary, Alberta and we are close to the Rocky Mountains. It only takes us 2 hours to drive to Banff, which is a very famous national park. We love the mountains and go there quite often for both leisure and work. Mike is a wedding photographer, and I help him as a second shooter sometimes. Many Canadian couples decide to have their engagement or wedding in the woods. The beautiful Rocky Mountains are always a stunning background for a love story.

What is your favorite image from your book and why?

My favorite image is the one where we are holding hands crossing the creek. I love the tone of the background. The creek and the bushes look as if they are painted. I also love the motion in this shot; it gives me the feeling that we will face everything together in our adventure ahead.

What is your favorite story behind a single shot in the book?

This image (above) always makes me smile when I look at it. It was shot before he proposed, and I had no idea. I thought it was just a normal hanging with friends moment, and I was making fun of him by putting the branch on his head and asking him to play Caesar. A couple of minutes later, he proposed. Before the trip, Mike told me he met a very nice photographer couple (we appreciate the amazing photos from Virginia and Evan!) and he wanted to introduce them to me. So we planned this hike in Chester Lake in Kananaskies. I was told to wear non-hiking clothes so that we could get some nice couple shots from our friends. I wasn't suspicious because we have many photographer friends. When we arrived at the lake on the top, we all stepped into the water for fun. And that's the moment he proposed.
